How to make a Felt Dart Board and Velcro Darts
Our twist on the traditional dart game makes this game inexpensive, easy to make, fun to play and much less dangerous than metal darts. The game consists of a 9 x 10 ½ inch felt dart board and a couple of 3 inch Velcro darts. The Velcro dart is less expensive to make than the little balls covered with lots of Velcro because this dart uses only a little square of Velcro. The child receiving your Operation Christmas Child shoe box will enjoy playing this game alone or with his/her friends.

Supplies: large plastic bag; label with title of game - example,  Dart Game or Stick-it

For dart: self-adhesive Velcro, 2 different colors of pipe cleaners, thin straws (works better than fat straws), white glue, scissors, tiny hole punch, wire cutter

For dart board: felt on bolt or pre-cut to 9x12 inches, glue or sewing machine, yarn, dowel or plastic straw, scissors, cardboard or tag board, permanent marker pen

Where to find: Party supply store, dollar stores, fabric and craft stores, discount stores

The dart:
1) Cut a ¾ -1 inch square of Velcro (comes in strips and pre-cut squares.
2) Punch 2 little holes in the fuzzy piece of the Velcro using a tiny hole-punch or knife or sharp punch
3) Allow enough space between the holes so the pipe cleaner doesn’t tear out when pulled (about ¼ of an inch between holes)
4) Cut a 12 inch pipe cleaner in half to make two 6 inch pieces – most pipe cleaners come in 12 inch stripes
5) Fold a 6 inch pipe cleaner in half and insert the 2 ends into the 2 holes of the smooth (sticky) side of the fuzzy Velcro square. Hold the folded end of pipe cleaner in place and twist the free ends a few times to secure
6) Place the sticky side of hooked Velcro square on to the sticky side of fuzzy Velcro square
7) Squirt a little white glue into one end of the 3 inch piece of the straw
8) Slid the glue-filled end of straw over the two ends of the pipe cleaner
9) Stand dart with Velcro piece down and allow the glue to dry

The dart board:
1) Cut a piece of felt fabric 9x12 inch or buy a pre-cut 9x12 inch felt rectangle
2) Lay the felt rectangle with the 9 inch wide on top and the 12 inch down lengthwise
3) From the top fold down 1 ½ inches
4) Glue or sew a seam through the fold to create a tube
5) Insert a wooden dowel and tie a piece of yarn at each end
6) Or, instead of using a wooden dowel, thread a piece of yarn (about 20 inches) through a plastic straw and insert the straw through the tube; tie the ends of the yarn together to hang the dart board
7) With card board or tag board make a pattern of 3 consecutively smaller circles;
8) Start with the largest circle pattern first and draw a line on the felt with a permanent marker outlining the pattern
9) Next place the middle circle on the felt and draw a line outlining the middle pattern
10) Finally, place the smallest pattern on the felt and draw a line outlining the smallest pattern

The game:
1) Make a label for your game - "Dart Game", "Stick-it!"
2) Place in plastic bag: dart board, 2 different colored darts, and your label

How to make Paper Airplane Kits
Colorful paper airplanes soaring through the air with laughing voices encouraging them on – remember how much fun you had making and flying paper airplanes! Now share that memory in your Operation Christmas Child shoe box with children who don’t even have paper.

Supplies: Computer/copy paper or card stock paper or construction paper (best to have color or pattern on both side of paper), sheets of small stickers, a photo copy of your favorite paper airplane pattern or patterns, 1-2 markers or colored pens or colored pencils, piece of cellophane (if needed for pattern), gallon size plastic bag

To find airplane patterns: books, magazines, paper airplane kit, or “Google” to find a pattern you like; use a simple pattern with little to no words. Avoid military or war-related patterns as many of these children live in war-torn areas.

To find materials: craft stores, discount stores

To make:
1) Cut 8 ½ x11 inch sheets of paper in half
2) Select 2-3 half sheets of different colored or patterned sheets of paper
3) Cut up sheet of small stickers
4) Prepare pieces of cellophane tape if need – see hint below
5) Select 1-2 markers, colored pens, or colored pencils
6) In a large gallon size plastic bag place: 2-3 half sheets of paper, a few small stickers, a marker or two, piece of cellophane tape if needed, and 1-2 paper airplane patterns
7) Fold over open end of plastic bag and tape closed
Hint on how to include a piece of cellophane tape (Scotch tape): after removing the stickers from a sheet of stickers, remove the remaining “sticker background” to reveal the shiny side of the paper. Cut this paper up into appropriate pieces. Place your piece or pieces of cellophane tape on the shiny side of the paper. The pieces of tape will come off easily. On the back side of the paper write a note or draw a picture to show that the piece of tape is on the reverse side. The child may not see the tape without your indicating that it is there.
